Design Process

Why submit a design?

Goodjoe is dedicated to inspiring change through creative design and in the process giving back to the community around us. To learn more, read the goodjoe story.

What should I design?

What inspires you to make the world around you better? Whether big or small, global or local, what positive changes would you like to see? We challenge you to create inspiring T-shirt designs that communicate your message and inspire others to "do something about it." If you're like us, you may feel compelled to add a little, or a lot of humor in your designs. We truly believe that humor is a healthy part of making a change.

To get an idea of what other artists have already created, visit the goodjoe store to see previous winning designs, or browse the current contest for the latest designs.

Some of the themes to get your creative juices flowing include: family, health care, education, environment, research, sports, humanitarian aid, animal protection, the arts, social issues, and charitable related issues.

If you have a great idea, but are limited on time or artistic talent, then submit your idea into the Inspiration Hat for other artists to work on and watch your idea come to life.

Design Guidelines

How to submit a design

Once you have an idea, create it in Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Adobe Photoshop or the GIMP.

You will only need to upload a low resolution version of your design into the contest using one of our T-shirt presentation templates. Be sure to keep your high resolution version of the design somewhere safe in case your design wins!

NOTE: As of writing this, Inkscape and the GIMP do not support pantone colors. If you use one of these programs, you will need to provide us with the pantone solid coated colors that should be used for your design if it is selected as a winning design.

1. Download one of the following presentation templates

Template ZIP File
Adobe Illustrator / Inkscape download (528 KB)
Adobe Photoshop / GIMP download (710 KB)

Goodjoe T-shirt Color Chart

2. Create your design

Design your T-shirt in a vector art program such as Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape (a free alternative to Illustrator). Or, design in a raster program such as Adobe Photoshop or the GIMP (a free alternative to Photoshop). If you are designing in a raster program, make sure you design at actual size at 300 dpi or higher.

Wouldn't it be great if you could look at a design and know who the artist was? We certainly think so. If you want, you can add your signature to your design for that special personal touch. See Give Soulfully, Ocean is Mad, and Guide Dog for examples.

When you are done, transfer your design to the T-shirt presentation template to create a 640 x 640 pixel gif, which you will upload into the contest. Keep in mind, the file you submit is for presentation purposes only. If your design is chosen as a winning design in the contest we will ask you for your high resolution artwork. You will also need to specify the pantone solid coated colors used in your design and your choice for both the guys and girls T-shirt colors.

Please review the Design Submission Decline Reasons section or download a copy of the Decline Reasons PDF before submitting a design.

3. Submit your design

Upload your 640 x 640 pixel gif into the contest. Once approved by goodjoe, your design will automatically show up in the contest for others to view, vote, and comment on. Your design image cannot be modified once it is live in the contest. If for some reason you need to make changes to the design, you may request to have it removed from the contest and later resubmit it. However, voting history and user comments will be deleted.

Design Submission Decline Reasons

Artwork submitted into a contest may be declined due to, but not limited to one of the following reasons.

Artwork is not relevant to a goodjoe theme

Goodjoe themes include, but are not limited to: family, health care, education, environment, research, sports, humanitarian aid, animal protection, the arts, social issues, and charitable related issues. We would like each T-shirt to carry a positive message, graphical and/or verbal, that will inspire and create a change. We believe that this type of design is a fun challenge for artists. Examples of humorous and inspirational T-shirt designs can be found in the goodjoe store and the current contest. The possibilities are endless. So if your design does not appear to be relevant to a goodjoe theme, we're sorry to say it will most likely be declined. Describing your design clearly when you submit it will help in the approval process.

Image quality is poor or design needs more work

If your artwork is not clearly visible it will be declined. We will notify you about the problem and give you the opportunity to fix it. You can then resubmit it for approval.

Artwork has too many colors

We currently allow for up to 6 unique colors to be used in a design. Submissions will be declined if the design contains more than 6 colors. Each shade of a color counts toward the six color limit, as do black and white.

Artwork not submitted on T-shirt template

We require that designs are submitted on our T-shirt template so we know the intended placement. A submission will be declined if the design submitted was not on one our templates.

Design is too large for print

Your artwork can be up to 15 inches wide by 17 inches tall and placed on the front of the T-shirt. Be careful not to design over a seam, onto the sleeves, or too close to the edge of a tee. If your artwork is a winning design, then we'll need your original high resolution artwork file. If your artwork is larger than 15" x 17", it will not be accepted and you may become disqualified from the contest.

Artwork contains copyrighted materials

You acknowledge that your Design is your own original work, has not been previously published and does not contain any trademarks, logos, copyrighted material or any other intellectual property belonging to any third party. We may decline your artwork if we feel it is in violation of this agreement. Please read this section carefully in the Terms and Conditions For Design Submission before you submit a design.

Artwork is inappropriate

Your artwork may be declined if it contains contain violence, profanity, obscenity, or any other defamatory or offensive matters. Try to keep your message lively, fun, and humorous. In general, goodjoe is very open-minded when it comes to creativity. So if we have an issue with your artwork, we'll let you know and give you the opportunity to modify it.

Artwork does not conform to the design guidelines

Your artwork must comply with the Design Guidelines specified on the FAQs page. They specify everything you need to know to create production ready artwork.
Please respect and follow these general rules to make goodjoe a fun, creative, and inspirational environment for everyone.
